When I started out my own offline business some years ago, I was quite naive about marketing. I thought that if I just "copied" some of those glossy ad styles you see all around in the magazines or newspapers, the money would pour in...
What a complete, utter joke!
Rather than pouring in, my hard earned money rather started to POUR OUT OF MY POCKETS LIKE THE NIAGARAS...
And, at the rate it poured out, I wouldn't be able to afford that for very long. Quite disappointing, not to mention DE-PRESSING!!! Damn did I feel down.
I would need to change my strategies. But FAST!
From several years earlier I had some experience with selling all kinds of stuff privately.
While living in the big city then, that was rather easy. I tried this in my business too, but living in the countryside, the effect for my effort was hardly worth it. If at all.
Back then, Living in the big city. All I had to do was put up some flyers around town. The rest practically took care of itself.
I sold all kinds of things I didn't have any use for anymore. Best of all, that advertising was practically "no cost". All it took was a few prints, and a tour around town to post my flyers where ever I could.
Then all I had was just wait until the phone start ringing. And mostly that wouldn't take too long;-)
In fact, I was more than frustrated that this didn't work out as goodd for my business. The main reason for this, was that I was targetting businesses as clients. Not private customers.
While many things may be the same, this strategy didn't work to well for targetting new business "partners". It could've worked better perhaps, if I had been back in the big city. But I wasn't. I was residing in a little suburban place some 30 - 35 miles outside town.
So, I experienced the really HARD way how devastatingly EXPENSIVE an ordinary marketing campaign could be in the newspapers... And I almost lost my entire working capital in shear frustration the very few, first months.
Need I tell you how I hated it?
When I was selling my private stuff I was profiting like crazy. (I even bought some stuff just for reselling too, to add some extra cash in my pockets. Yeah! Those were fine days my friend;-)
The main reason for my profit that time, was that I had almost no risk whatsoever in my marketing. A little time spent writing the ads. While printing cost was more expensive at that time, I had just bought my first computer and printer, so printing the sheets was fast and easy.
Next I had instant access to a huge audience for my products I wanted to sell and profit from.
Not too targeted perhaps, but the shear quantity from that more than made up for my effort. All I had to lose was a few sheets of paper, and some time. Time by the way I considered useful and healthy exercise anyways, as I used my feet, or my bicycle for the "distribution".
And remember: These days were several years before people even had computers... And internet? Hmmmnnn?
By the way, also I used some text ads on TV with great succes, as long as I used some targetting. Not all products here were successful and profitable... However, with the right software, and a low speed modem, they were pretty cheap. That way there was no risk for testing out really. Also, I used whatever free or low cost newspapers I could find to advertise in. They worked like charm, as the risk and expense was very low, or free (except from stamp, paper, ink and envelope of course;-)
Well. Back to my devastating marketing losses when I started out with my own offline business several years later...
I couldn't keep throwing out any more good money for bad, so I had to stop my marketing and find better ways of doing it...
At that time internet access was quite expensive, but I soon realized the internet soon would become a goldmine!
I started testing out some of my advertising that I did in the "good o'le days" again, but this time on the internet.
I tested different kinds of product, suited and targeted for special groups of people, or people of interest only...
At first, I found this hard to do, as I had to find a new set of resources. In one way, a totally different beast, while at the same time.. EXACTLY THE SAME!
What was different was the systems, the technology, the knowhow. The people however...
THEY'RE ALWAYS ALL THE SAME;-)
So, I tested out by targetting out special forums, and interest groups and classified ads places. Problem though was that while there were few business related places to place ads, or find people for my products, there were several places for private interest groups already.
So, I made a few campaigns targeting the private consumer market, for some of my products. And what a response!
Things were just working like the old days again, and it did so, even though I was not in the city... What a turn on!
The turn off however, was that my "new" range of product would demand a whole lot of new investment in order to be anything to consider further.
Also, I hated doing and making that stuff for the private consumer market, as the work involved was to much. (Much graphic work involved)
Sure! There still were good money involved making just one or a few for a private consumer, but that couldn't compare to the corporate market.
So, I did some more testing, Within several markets actually. All with GREAT results and a rather neat ROI (Return On Investment).
Still though, I quit it, as the work involved way way more than I felt comfortable with. Sure. I could've outsourced, but I didn't have the money, nor the desire for that, so I let it be.
I was satisfied though with that new experience. Also, this I could take with me further into my next venture.
Problem though, was that I could not figure out how to sell my "easier" product range to the customers I wanted...
Namely the corporate market, where the real big money, unless you had way more capital than I did at the time. I was running my business from my home, as that would save me enormous amounts of money. So, if I'd had a store somewhere, that would've changed things a bit, but I didn't.
Besides. I didn't want a store. At least not yet. I wanted to build my business from home, and then, maybe later get an office or a store in a regular business environment or a shopping mall or whatever...
For now, I was more than pleased with staing home, and working out of my bedroom so to speak... Well, really, at the time I was well suited with space, and I had 3/4 of one of the floors in the house for my business.
Yeah, I had invested in quite a heap of expensive equipment...
And in a sense, I did it all wrong from the start, but more on that somewhere else.
Anyways! What I found, was that It was quite comfortable with working from home. It saved me quite a deal of cash to, from renting space in my own home. Not only that, but I saved hundreds upon hundreds of dollars, each and every month from not having to commute to and from work each and every day... (thousands and thousands saved in my currency)
Not to mention all the time I now didn't have to WASTE by driving back and forth. I really loved and could really get comfortable with this way of lifestyle, and my 15 second commute back and forth to work every day!;-)
Face it, if you’re just a bit like me… (lazy that is…) and want things a bit easier, without all the hassle of having to work your guts out ( that’s why you’re looking at the web for your own business – is it not?) – then you need to take advantage of this little known strategy to make things a lot easier on you!
So, eventually I got to better and better methods using the net driving customers, prospects and traffic.
Also, I spent quite some time visiting my clients - face to face, in the old fashioned "cold call prospecting" way. While it was a lot of work, at the same time it was damned lucrative. At least for me it was...
Well. Thats not quite true. Cold call prospecting SUCKED big time! At least until I figured it all out...
The big problem with cold call prospecting was, and still is:
THERE IS NO TRUST ESTABLISHED.
At least not yet.
So, the key was the followup. But, in my case, I was near broke from investing some hundred grand (in dollars) - for machines, inventory and equipment - getting started with my chosen business.
AS I told you, somewhat I did it "all" backwards from what I should've done, but this is how I did it, along with most other people who start their business as well...
You see, instead of finding the market first, I found my product first. Also, this was a product, as well as an industry of which I had no former knowledge of. None! Whatsoever.
Where I came from, the IT environment, I had quite some success, and not many could do what I did. In fact, I was sent in to rescue ventures that others, more experienced, more educated, and longer in the business before me had to abandon. But that's not the point here...

Anyways, back to the story:
Soon I got too much to do, and without realizing it, one of the "crappy" websites, for my products, SOON generated SEVERAL hundred, and even thousand dollar a month.
ALL without me doing anything but the initial load of work to get it running.
Well. Actually, it took some time. Way too much at the time actually, so I didn't develop it any further. My capacity was exploded, plus there were way to much other things - like administration etc, to take care of too.
So, I stuck mostly to my basic cold call prospecting...
STill though, I had to make my own twist to that one too...
I had to. Regular cold call prospecting, while can be profitable, it SUCKS big time. Takes way too much time, effort and resources on a regular basis. At least so I thought. (I still do)
There MUST be some better ways of doing this I thought!
And luckily, there were...
Instead of waiting 3 or 4 or 6 months for the customer to get ready for me and my products, now I was able to shortcut that time heavily.
Instead of waiting several months. Now. Mostly all the time it took for most new clients to enter, was reduced to mere weeks, and at some times days or hours even.
And, I made several twists to that too.
Then, a little later, due to some stupid, boring, hell-of-a-time incidents on the domestic front, I had to shut down my entire business even before it could take off as I planned it to do...
My plan was to start the business from my livingrom, and within 2 to 3 years, I would move it to a proper business arena (like a store front or an office building for business)
Anyways. Things didn't turn out that way, and due to stupid little mistakes on the home front, I found myself diggin further and farther into the dirt.
Soon I was exhausted. And in order to survive, and keep, or regain my good health I had a few years earlier, I decided to shut EVERYTHING down.
But not before I had lost SEVERAL millions invested in time, and not to mention from the stock market exchange.
If I had been left alone to do my thing, my profits alone from the stock market would've easily exceeded the 10 million USD mark. BUT, due to those seemingly unimportant little things (some years before) - now I lost that too!
(So thank you very much my dear...!!!)
NEXT:
During the few next years of LIVING HELL that followed, broke, worn out. Disgusted with most everything. Health gone to pieces, I shut most everything that didn't have to do with personal reconditioning and recreation out of the picture.
As time passed, luckily I was able to regain some of that devotion, enthusiasm, guts, joy, drive and desire I lost those years ago. Worst of all, in this stupid process, I lost not only my cash and my thins...
Had it only been that well...
BUT, I lost the most precious there is to lose... Myself, my inner drive, my inner vision, my intuition or inner "guidance" if you will, and my health as well. And that nothing can replace. Money lost will always come back to you...
Those other things? Thats a tougher story. Still though, they are connected. Lose "yourself", and "all" is lost.
Lose your things and your cash, yourself (inner drive, intuition etc) intact, and money will soon return.
Anyways, I've had to work myself up again the hard way, and go back so to speak, and deal with the things that ruined me. Slowly rebuilding my enthusiasm, drive and desire.
And today, after re-organizing everything, after moving away of course from my old home (etc), I'm most only running my business from the web.
I guess about 95% of everything - or more, that I earn today is due to my webmarketing efforts.
Should I use the same equivalent to drive traffic through the "ordinary" offline marketing, there wouldn't be very much left... But, because I mainly deal with marketing through the net, things are so much easier.
Also, by marketing through the net, I don't have to do any of that dreaded "Cold Call Marketing Prospecting" again, unless I would want to of course.
All this due to having my own websites. While involving some hard work initially to set up, not to mention some time spent, now I'm making "autopilot", pushbutton income from the web again!
OKAY! I cannot make any guarantees or promises on how you, or anyone else would do with this. That is both unethical, as well as it is illegal. What you or anyone else will make, is entirely up to how much skill, effort, drive, time or money you have to start with...
However, while most businesses are reporting heavy losses these days, FINALLY, I'm back into the blue, making profits again today. And that in spite of the so called recession.
So, again:
All this due to some hard work, studying, systems, and my own websites that does the marketing for me. Not to forget, I've spent an awful lot of time and money buying and setting up systems to make this as handsfree as possible...
And with that, we're back to the thing about different means of marketing and driving traffic (or exposure to your business) to make that marketing have an impact on your wallet and your bottom line.
Sure, affiliate marketing and joint ventures still are – and maybe or probably even will continue being the best sales and traffic boosters there are…
HOWEVER: This require the ordinary or little guy (you and me) to have your own product or service - something that you created – or paid to have created – WITH YOUR NAME BRAND ON IT - to SELL!
Why?
Simply because – if you don’t – what have you to do a joint venture – or an affiliate deal with?
Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!
You’re right, but let me first start off by telling why I believe that’s utter BullShit – Okay?
Sure, in the digital aspect, you could buy those reprint-rights that’s flooding around everywhere… They’ll cost you $97.00 today – BUT tomorrow – EVERYBODY and their cat own their own copy… So soon enough… it starts selling for 47, 37, 29, 19 or even 4,95 bucks a piece…
And, then… How do you think you’re gonna’ be unique enough? – So the big-list owners will WANT to talk to you…
And honestly – would you talk to me – if you had a list of several thousands – about a product that half the world already had bought – or even got for FREE the rights to sell?
Sure, that could happen, and you could get lucky… Still, I wouldn’t bet my life on it..
Unless…. (there may be some few exceptions, but they’re rare in this case…)
Unless you make up something of your own – make a twist with these products – and you’re the first – or at least the first to spread the news massively… (In fact, you can see this twist done successfully – creating tons of cash for the originators – from time to time…)
But still… In general, there will be to much competition trying to cut a JV deal with other peoples resell – reprint products. To many of them are a dime a dozen, which closes you out of the loop as an interesting JV or Affiliate partner, to most serious list owners…
Another Exception would be if you're the owner of more Exclusive – More scarce – more expensive reprint-rights… as less people can afford to buy these…
So, what’s left for you?
Doesn’t matter if you have a huge list – or not…
Doesn’t matter whether you have your own unique product or not…
Doesn’t matter what the guru’s say or not…
